LRAP Awards

LRAP awards are made through an open, competitive process. LRAP funds applicants who serve low-income clients through legal service agencies and to those agencies that support them - e.g. MJF, Legal Services Advocacy Project. LRAP recipients may reapply for awards for up to fifteen years.

In 2008/2009, LRAP awarded more than $237,000 to 65 attorneys. The base award was $4,000 per year.

The amount of each award is determined by a formula that considers adjusted income and debt load. Special donor advised gifts might be added on top of this amount.

Applying for an Award

LRAP accepts applications twice per year.  Applications become available on our web site and from our office on March 1st and September 1st.  Applications are due May 15th and November 1st respectively.

Eligibility

To be eligible for an LRAP award, you must:

  • Be serving low-income clients at least 35 hours per week at a nonprofit, government, international organization, or Native American tribal agency.
  • Apply within three years of graduation.  (An extension is available for those completing judicial clerkships. Also, this requirement does not apply to previous LRAP recipients.)
  • Be employed in MN or have graduated from a MN law school.
  • Have an adjusted income of $47,500 or less.
