Your support sustains the work of attorneys like Julia Zwak. At the Hennepin County Housing Court, LRAP Recipient Julia Zwak often meets clients for the first time on the day of their eviction hearing, but she recently helped a proactive tenant who sought help from Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid’s Housing Court Project in advance of her hearing. Julia helped the client identify defenses to the eviction and prepare for court. Armed with Julia’s advice, the client represented herself at court and prevailed in having the eviction dismissed. However, there was more to the client’s story.

After Julia helped a client represent herself successfully against an eviction, Julia was able to provide full representation to the client for an affirmative case against the landlord. The client’s upstairs neighbors were extremely disturbing- there was even gunfire- but the landlord refused to resolve the problem. He was also unfairly billing the shared utilities in violation of Minnesota law. Julia, with help from a colleague with expertise on the utilities issue, was prepared to file a rent escrow case in court, but was able to negotiate a monetary settlement with the landlord. This settlement, and a favorable reference from the landlord, enabled the client to move to a safer home for her family.

The generosity of these recent donors enabled 50 legal aid attorneys to serve some 10,000 low-income clients through LRAP. We can’t thank you enough. Your support makes all the difference.
